A Word From Our Founder

Hi friends,

January is a month of gentle reset. A chance to settle back into rhythm, cook simply, and reconnect with what feels good and grounding. It is quieter than December, but no less meaningful, offering space to explore, reflect, and ease into the year ahead one glass at a time.

This month’s 12-bottle selection is designed to meet January where it is. Lively and expressive, yet balanced and thoughtful. You will find a mix of freshness, texture, and comfort here, with wines that feel just as right for an easy weeknight meal as they do for a longer weekend table. Nothing too heavy, nothing too precious. Just bottles that invite curiosity and reward attention.

The beauty of this selection is in its range. Bright, food friendly whites sit alongside energetic reds, with a few playful, unexpected moments woven in. These are wines meant to be opened without ceremony, shared generously, and enjoyed over time, allowing each bottle to unfold naturally.

As we begin a new year, we are grateful to be starting it with you. Thank you for trusting us to curate wines that feel intentional, exciting, and true to the season, and for continuing to support independent producers around the world.

Here’s to a grounded, optimistic January and many good bottles ahead.

Cheers,
Holly

Sebestyen Mozaik winery isn't just about producing Hungarian Bikavér reds; it's a family legacy deeply rooted in tradition and reverence for the land. Founded by Zoltan Sebestyen in the 1990s, the winery honors the heritage of his grandfather, who planted the first vines in Szekszard decades earlier.

What sets Sebestyen Mozaik apart is their steadfast commitment to quality and sustainable viticulture. Their vineyards, nestled in the heart of the Szekszard region, benefit from its rolling hills, loess soil, and ideal grape-ripening climate. With meticulous care, they cultivate Kékfrankos (Blaufränkisch), Kadarka, Merlot, and Cabernet Franc grapes using sustainable practices.

De Mena, meaning "By Nature" in Catalan, is a passion project of Sébastien Agelet, located in the small, time-forgotten village of Paziols, nestled in the Pyrenees Mountains. Once part of the Principality of Catalonia, Paziols still holds a medieval charm. Sébastien, a visionary vigneron, transitioned his family’s old vines to organic farming, pulling them away from the co-op to create wines that reflect nature’s purity and authenticity. De Mena’s wines are naturally crafted with minimal intervention, showcasing the terroir and embracing a philosophy rooted in passion. Sébastien’s wines are known for being thought-provoking, purposeful, and utterly delicious, with an emphasis on organic, traditional winemaking methods.

Club Pick 3

A chillable, blush-leaning red from Gilroy made with a mix of skin-fermented and direct-pressed fruit. Black Muscat ferments on skins for two weeks, while Petite Sirah and Torrontes are pressed directly, all fermented with native yeasts. Aged seven months on fine lees in neutral oak and stainless steel, then lightly filtered with low sulfur at bottling, the wine stays soft, fruit-forward, and easy to drink with minimal structure and plenty of freshness.

Tasting the 2020 wines, we were impressed by their purity and the clear vision of their young creator, only in his early twenties and on his second vintage. Adding these promising gourmand wines to our collection was an easy decision, and we eagerly anticipate his future work. It's delightful to see the Beaujolais, a region renowned for its iconic natural winemakers, continue to produce fresh talent.

Club Pick 5

Crafted by winemaker Kosie Van Der Merwe, this Cabernet Franc from Elgin showcases the region's cool nights and moderate days, perfect for slow ripening. The grapes were harvested in two batches, ensuring optimal ripeness. The wine was made using 40% whole bunch clusters and 60% destemmed grapes, with natural fermentation lasting three weeks. After fermentation, the wine was basket-pressed and aged in 400L and 300L barrels. Fun Fact: Cabernet Franc is known for its versatility and distinctive green pepper notes. In the cooler climate of Elgin, this grape develops a unique balance of ripe fruit flavors and fresh herbal characteristics, making it a favorite among wine enthusiasts for its complexity and food-friendly profile.

Max Dexheimer, with a fond smile, gestures towards the barrel sample of his Pinot Noir, reflecting on the unique character of his vineyard's wine. Despite its intense concentration and smoky notes, he assures us it's not oak-induced; rather, it's the essence of the terroir itself. Inherited traditional Stückfass barrels, passed down through generations, play a pivotal role in shaping the wine's distinct personality. Max attributes this signature smokiness to the vineyard's rich, iron-laden soil, a distinguishing feature from his other plots. Nestled beneath his family's home lies his old cellar, where these wines mature, reflecting his unwavering commitment to quality. As a Pinot enthusiast, Max understands the importance of patience, allowing the wine ample time to evolve and soften.
