A Word From Our Founder

We have all kinds of great options in this month's club and there is a not so subtle V-day theme throughout! Reds to go with foods you may want to eat (or just ones that feel the love - Ti Adoro, For me) as well as some bubbles and lighter wines. A few rare orange wines we've never had before I was able to sneak into this club so extra enjoy those!

Monte Bernardi, located in Chianti Classico's esteemed Panzano subzone, is renowned for producing elegant, mineral-driven wines. The estate's 53 hectares include 15 hectares of vineyards, with vines over 40 years old, situated on south-facing slopes at 350 meters above sea level. The terroir features a blend of shale (Galestro), sandstone (Pietraforte), and limestone (Alberese), with the Sa'etta cuvée sourced exclusively from Pietraforte soils. Founded in 1085, Monte Bernardi released its first vintage in 1992. Since acquiring the estate in 2003, the Schmelzer family has focused on biodynamic farming and low-intervention winemaking. Winemaker Michael Schmelzer's approach emphasizes balance, with vibrant acidity and earthy complexity, even in warmer vintages. Monte Bernardi produces Sangio

Without formal training, Philippe and Emma immersed themselves in books, observed other producers, and learned from their mistakes. "It’s a bit like poker," Philippe remarked. "You dearly pay one or two times, then you watch out! This is the basis of learning." They released their first vintage in 2001 after acquiring several plots. From the outset, they embraced biodynamics, earning organic certification in 2008 and becoming one of fifteen organic producers in Saint-Chinian.

Nestled amidst the 'garigue', their vineyards are isolated and teeming with biodiversity. Most plots are plowed by horse, and the family creates their own compost. They manage low yields to encourage the vines' natural immune defense.

Club Pick 4

Hand-harvested and vinified with minimal intervention, the wine is aged for three months on fine lees in stainless steel, enhancing its floral and nutty bouquet. Erste & Neue, based in Alto Adige, unites three top co-ops, including the region's first co-op from 1900 and the newest formed after Alto Adige joined Italy, under the name "First & New." In 1986, these merged with Cantina Kaltern, bringing together 500 small growers across 280 hectares of sustainably farmed alpine terroir. Their south-facing, terraced vineyards span elevations up to 860 meters, producing ten grape varieties, including Pinot Grigio, Gewürztraminer, Lagrein, and Schiava. Ample sunlight and cool alpine temperatures create fresh, balanced, and aromatically expressive wines. With a focus on tradition and innovation, Cellar Master Gerhard Sanin combines minimal interventionist practices with modern techniques, highlighting Alto Adige's majestic wine culture.

Jean-Marie Rimbert, a native of Provence, arrived in the Languedoc nearly
25 years ago & managed the vineyards at Château de Flaugergues for 5
years until he saved up enough to purchase his first parcels of gnarled
ancient Carignan vines that had been nurtured in schist-laden soils for the
better part of the last century."
