A Word From Our Founder

This November, we’ve curated a lineup that’s as unique as the places it comes from. First up, Brkić Plava Greda from Bosnia—think rich fruit with that perfect balance of earthiness, like Gamay but with its own twist. It’s a natural match for turkey! Next, Rodica Malvadiesel from Slovenia brings the fresh and bright vibes with a touch of unfiltered magic—perfect with seafood or grilled meats. Finally, we’ve got Bodegas Ponce La Xara from Spain, a smooth, textured Grenache that’s vibrant with red fruit and just a hint of spice. It’s all about the good times and great food this month—cheers to that! 🍷

Vino Brkić, founded by Pasko Brkić in the late 1970s, is a family winery located in the Čitluk wine district, south of Mostar. Pasko planted vineyards at 800-1,300 feet above sea level and built a modern cellar. His son, Josip, took over after Pasko’s passing and focused on native varietals like Žilavka and Blatina. Inspired by organic practices after attending an Organic Wine Expo in Italy, Josip embraced biodynamics in the early 2000s. The winery uses minimal intervention, employing gravity, gentle pressing, native yeasts, and ageing in local Bosnian oak barrels. Josip’s approach results in wines that reflect the purity and balance of the land.

Juan Antonio Ponce began his Bodegas Ponce in 2005, at the age of 23. He works biodynamically in the vineyard, and in the winery he takes a natural approach, using low levels of sulfur dioxide. . The winemaking process begins with hand harvesting. The bunches of grapes are then chilled to 8 degrees C and fermented whole-bunch, with the stems, in a type of fermentation known as "remango", which was once popular in Rioja. Juan Antonio Ponce worked as the right-hand man to Telmo Rodriguez at Cia de Vinos Telmo Rodriguez for 5 years. During this time he was in charge of winemaking, vineyard management, etc. His father, who owned some land in Manchuela, decided to start this project with him. - T Edwards

Club Pick 6

Col di Luna 'FLORA' Rosato Brut NV is a vibrant sparkling wine produced at the foot of the Dolomites. Made from the local Raboso Piave grape, this wine is a trifecta of spice, brambly fruit, and energetic acidity. The wine undergoes a slight maceration on the skins for 12 hours before continuing its fermentation in the tank and finishing in the bottle, following the traditional col fondo method. Expect a bit of sediment, or 'fondo,' in the bottle, adding to its character and charm.
Fun Fact: The Raboso Piave grape, native to the Veneto region, is known for its high acidity and tannins, making it an ideal choice for sparkling wines. The traditional col fondo method used in making this wine involves finishing fermentation in the bottle, which creates natural fizz and leaves a small amount of sediment, adding complexity and texture to the wine.
