The 2024 Syrah from Banele Vakele’s Tembela label is his most powerful and structured vintage to date. Sourced primarily from the renowned Karibib Vineyard in the Polkadraai Hills—with a smaller portion from Jakkalsfontein in the Swartland—this wine showcases South Africa's top Syrah terroir. Fermented with 80% whole bunches and aged in old 500L oak, it’s a vibrant, detailed red with both tension and depth. A wine rooted in community, place, and personal heritage.

Charred lamb chops, mushroom ragu, grilled eggplant, black pepper steak, aged gouda.

Cracked black pepper, violets, wild herbs, and blackberry. The palate is bright, mid-weight, and taut, with fine-grained tannins and savory stem spice on the finish.

Tembela Wines was founded by Banele Vakele, one of South Africa’s most inspiring new-generation winemakers. His story began in Khayelitsha, a township outside Cape Town, where a childhood daydream gazing out at vineyards during school sparked his passion for wine.

After earning a scholarship to a top school in Constantia, Banele’s curiosity eventually led him to study winemaking and work alongside some of South Africa’s finest, including Duncan Savage at Savage Wines in Salt River, where he continues to craft his wines.

In 2002, Nadia Lusseau embarked on her journey as a winemaker by establishing Château Haut Lavigne, seizing control of 8.5 hectares of vineyards nestled in the Cotes de Duras. Within this expanse, 4 hectares are dedicated to Sauvignon Blanc and Semillon, while the remaining 4.5 hectares nurture Merlot, Cabernet Franc, and Cabernet Sauvignon. Situated approximately 100 kilometers from the Atlantic, the vineyard benefits from the invigorating ocean breeze, coupled with reduced rainfall and increased sunshine compared to neighboring appellations. Nadia's meticulous viticultural practices yield exceptional fruit, while her winemaking ethos embraces the essence of terroir, allowing it to shine through in every bottle.

Since founding his domaine in 2001, Olivier Pithon has become one of the benchmark growers in the rugged hills of Calce, in France’s Roussillon region. Working organically from the start and fully biodynamic since 2010, Olivier farms roughly 19 hectares of schist, marl, and limestone soils, aided by cows, bees, and an unwavering respect for living ecosystems.

In the cellar, fermentations rely on native yeasts, sulfur use is minimal, and élevage takes place in concrete, stainless steel, or neutral wood—always with the goal of expressing the freshness, depth, and energy of Calce’s terroir. His flagship wines, including the Laïs series (named for his beloved cow) and Mon P’tit Pithon (a more playful, early-drinking line), showcase Mediterranean varieties.
