A Word From Our Founder

Hi friends,

March in the orange club explores the many ways skin-contact wines can show character and depth. These are wines that sit comfortably between white and red, offering texture, aromatics, and structure while still keeping a sense of brightness and drinkability.

This month’s selection moves across several expressions of orange wine. Some bottles feel lifted and aromatic, while others bring more grip and earthy complexity from extended skin contact. Together they show how this style can range from delicate and floral to more layered and structured, all while maintaining a vibrant energy in the glass.

These wines invite a slower kind of enjoyment. They open up gradually, revealing new aromas and textures with a little time. Whether poured alongside a meal or enjoyed on their own, they tend to reward curiosity and encourage conversation around the table.

As always, the wines come from growers who approach their work with patience and respect for tradition and place. Skin-contact winemaking has deep historical roots, and these producers continue that tradition with thoughtful farming and minimal intervention in the cellar.

Thank you for continuing to explore this category with us and for supporting wines that embrace both history and creativity.

Here’s to textured glasses, curious palates, and the many shades of orange.

Cheers,
Holly

Club Pick 1

A playful skin-contact blend inspired by the “Mallsoft” music genre, created by Joe Swick through tasting and blending different lots in the cellar. Grapes come from organically farmed vineyards across Oregon’s Willamette Valley and Washington’s Columbia Valley. Each variety macerates on skins for 45 days, is foot-stomped daily, then pressed and aged in neutral French oak. Bottled with a minimal intervention approach, the wine reflects Swick’s philosophy of making raw, expressive wines with freshness and character.

Joe Swick is a 5th generation Oregonian winemaker who captures the true taste of the Pacific Northwest through his wines. Joe sources his grapes from organic, biodynamic and sustainable vineyards in Oregon and Washington. After years of traveling and harvesting in various pockets of the world, such as Piedmont, Portugal, and Tasmania, Joe returned to Oregon to start his very own label in 2013. He embraces the minimal approach when making his wines such as using native yeasts, aging in old barrels and adding minimal sulphur during bottling—only when absolutely necessary. While Joe started out with a focus on making Oregon Pinot Noir, he now has explored many other grape varietals and experiments with different techniques during élevage.

Club Pick 2

A deeply skin-contact Viognier inspired by music and crafted from sustainably farmed vines in Macclesfield in the Adelaide Hills. The grapes ferment naturally and remain on skins for 99 days before pressing and aging in neutral oak. Bottled without fining or filtration, the wine combines intensity with delicacy, reflecting both the aromatic nature of Viognier and the producer’s experimental style.

Poppelvej is the project of Danish brothers Jens and Uffe Deichmann. The name means “street of poplars,” referencing the street where they grew up in Denmark, and the original hand-painted sign from their great-great-grandfather now hangs in the winery.

Uffe moved to South Australia for a harvest and ended up staying after meeting his future wife, Nicole. The couple eventually settled in McLaren Vale, where Poppelvej was founded in 2016.

The wines are made from sustainably farmed vineyards in McLaren Vale and Adelaide Hills. Fermentations are low intervention with minimal additions, and the wines are typically bottled without fining or filtration. Production is small, around 4,000 cases annually, and the wines reflect both the creativity of their makers and the character of the region.

Club Pick 3

An amber wine made from biodynamically farmed Grechetto in the Pian dell’Oca vineyard in Cortona. Whole clusters undergo partial carbonic maceration for about ten days before pressing. The wine then ages for six months in clay amphorae, preserving freshness while developing gentle texture from skin contact. Bottled with minimal sulfur and no fining or filtration.

The Juice Asylum is a small experimental project founded in 2016 by winemaker Alessio Guidi at Avignonesi in Tuscany. Created as a space for creative winemaking, the project focuses on minimal intervention and allowing wines to express their origin as naturally as possible.

Grapes come from certified organic and biodynamic vineyards, and the wines are made with gentle techniques such as spontaneous fermentation, co-fermentation, and alternative aging vessels. Rather than heavily shaping the wines in the cellar, Alessio aims to let the fruit and vineyard character guide each bottling.

Production is very small, around 1,700 cases annually. Influenced by natural wine producers from regions like the Loire Valley, Jura, and Swartland, the wines reflect Alessio’s curiosity and commitment to ex

A traditional Georgian amber wine made from the indigenous Khikhvi grape in the village of Tibaani in Kakheti. Whole clusters are gently crushed and macerated on skins and stems for six months before being transferred to qvevri for another year of aging underground. Practicing organic farming and minimal intervention in the cellar allow the wine to express the ancient winemaking traditions and distinctive terroir of Georgia.

Pheasant’s Tears was founded in 2007 by American artist and winemaker John Wurdeman and Georgian farmer Gela Patalishvili in the village of Tibaani in Kakheti. Their work focuses on reviving Georgia’s ancient winemaking traditions and preserving the country’s vast diversity of indigenous grape varieties.

The winery farms organically across several vineyard sites in Georgia and works with native grapes such as Rkatsiteli, Saperavi, and many lesser-known varieties. Most wines are fermented and aged in traditional qvevri, clay vessels buried underground, following techniques that date back thousands of years.

With minimal intervention in both vineyard and cellar, Pheasant’s Tears produces wines that reflect Georgia’s deep winemaking heritage and the unique character of its landscapes.
