February 2023 | 12 Bottle Club

Welcome to the February 12 Bottle Club from MYSA Natural Wine!

A note from our founder:

This month we have a LOT of heavy hitters, so great job being in the club :) First we have a delicious red from one of our favorite Oregon winemakers, Limited Addition. Then we have 4 big names in Italian and Spanish wine that are typically out of reach for the club that I was able to secure just enough to get into this club! If you loved these you can check out the others (while supplies last) as we have a whole group of Do.te. Lammidia, Macatho and Microbio wines this month! Plus some dope bubbles from Schmitt!

    About Do.t.e.

    Adega Eloi Lorenzo Vineyard

"Do.t.e. (down to earth) is an experimental entity that seeks alternative answers in the management of contemporary viticulture. It’s taking one step back in order to go two steps forward. A return to agricultural origins that clearly defines the present and realistically imagines the future. It’s the desire to stand out with wines that spontaneously expresses their reason for being —beyond statutes and production regulations— based on the foundational principles of the entire project: health, ethics, everyday life... Today we produce small quantities of different wines, thanks to a better experience and evolving taste, all handmade and bottled with the same designation —Vino*— the least noble but the only one favorable to the creative process." - Filippo & Francesca

    About Alfredo Maestro

    Alfredo Maestro winemaker=

Juan Sojo and Ángel Luis González started Cerro la Barca in 2003. The two met in oenology school and bonded over their desire to revive the reputation of their native Extremadura, in western Spain near the Portuguese border. While it’s history can be traced to 550 BCE, phylloxera and powdery mildew hit the region hard in the 19th century. Winemaking started a gradual revival after the Spanish Civil War and has been picking up steam ever since. The majority of the wine currently produced in the region is bulk Vino de Mesa (table wine). Cerro la Barca is in the Ribera del Guadiana region, which was awarded DO status in 1999. Extremadura (capitol Mérida) is broken up into two subregions, Càceres in the north and Badajoz in the south. The DO Ribera del Guadiana falls in both regions and is broken down into six heterogeneous subregions that vary in elevation from 250 to 800 meters above sea level. As a whole, the region has a dry continental climate with temperatures getting up to 100 degrees in the summer and down to freezing in the winter. With an average rainfall of 17 inches a year, summer drought is a challenge in the region, as is springtime frost.

    About Lammidia

    Lammidia winemaker=

Davide Gentile and Marco Giuliani were childhood friends in Abruzzo, then lost touch. When they found each other again after university, it was with a shared passion for wine, so they decided to try their hands at making it together. Since the beginning of their project, they’ve approached it with a love of both natural winemaking and avid experimentation. They’ve never trained at a formal wine academy, and they don’t rely on agronomists or oenologists. They have learned by trial and error in the vineyards and cellars. In fact, their first fermentation in 2010 was such a disaster that they called in an expert grandma, virtuosa at getting rid of the evil eye, to perform a ritual over their grapes. Apparently it worked, and Lammidia (“evil eye” in Abruzzese dialect) was born. - From Cream Wine.

    About MicroBio

    MicroBio Winemaker

Welcome to the República Independiente del Verdejo under President Ismael Gozalo. Many know him for his work at Ossian, one of the more respectable houses in Rueda, where he was the winegrower and maker since founding it in 2004. Ismael’s family owns some of the oldest (between 100-200 years old) ungrafted pre-phylloxera vines, most of which in the town of Nieva, province of Segovia between 800-900 meters of altitud. Characterized by it’s sandy soils, these head trained vines have never seen any chemicals over the different generations that have cared for them. Though outside of the D.O. for never budging to the region’s modern and manipulative techniques, to this day Ossian remains one of the few organic producers in Rueda. Today, under the Pago de Carraovejas umbrella, Ossian continues to make some of the more interesting wines of the region but Ismael took his talent elsewhere, bringing his family’s most prized vineyards with him.

    About Vinificate

We are two brothers in love with our land and our culture and we want to value what has always been cultivated here. Our philosophy is to try to make wines that speak of the south, of the coast, of the area where we grew up, made in the most traditional way possible. For this reason we only use the native varieties of the area and we work with spontaneous fermentations, where only the yeasts that come from the vineyard are involved. In this way we think that we are able to more faithfully recreate the concept of terroir, a variety planted in its area and expressing the edaphoclimatic conditions of a given vineyard. - Vinificate

    About Marc Pesnot

Marc was always searching for the perfume from the melon de bourgogne grapes. The juice itself he describes as not particularly aromatic, but after years of tinkering, he has discovered that very complex aromas live in the cellular structure underneath the skin. By working with a very sophisticated press that allows him to calibrate for a very gentle and slow pressure, Marc has been able to access these cellular areas, to release the natural perfume the grape has to offer. Now he is very happy to work with what he considers a noble grape. =Jenny & Francois

    About Bianka and Daniel Schmitt

If Rheinhessen is at the epicenter of a new wave in German winemaking—one full of young energy that emphasizes high-quality, natural methods—then husband and wife Daniel and Bianka Schmitt are at the epicenter of Rheinhessen. Rheinhessen is the largest wine growing region in Germany, and has been largely associated with bulk production. However, in recent years, the region’s reputation has begun to shift as a new generation of younger, more innovative growers are reducing yields and honing in on the largely undervalued terroir of this region. Bianka and Daniel epitomize this new wave of German winemakers, working hard to produce wines of the highest quality with as little intervention as possible.
