A blend of Gamay and Syrah from two organically farmed parcels in Sécheras. The north-facing Gamay grows on granite, while the south-facing Syrah comes from granite and sand. The Gamay is split between direct pressing and 14 days of whole-bunch maceration, while the Syrah undergoes 10 days of whole-bunch maceration. Both ferment with indigenous yeasts and age separately for five months before blending, with the Gamay in concrete and the Syrah in lined amphoras.

The Producer

About Jean-Francois Malsert

Jean-François “Jeff” Malsert launched Domaine de L’Iserand’s first official vintage in 2017 after previously running the wine bar Carafes en Folie in Tournon-sur-Rhône. He farms steep granite slopes in Sécheras and Ozon, working the vineyards manually with two mules and using organic treatments with minimal copper and sulfur.

The domaine grows Syrah, Roussanne, Marsanne, Viognier, Gamay, Chasselas, and Dureza. In the cellar, Jeff relies on indigenous yeasts, with wines aged in demi-muids, concrete vats, and sandstone amphoras. Reds are generally fermented whole cluster, while some whites receive light maceration. The wines are unfined and unfiltered, with sulfur used only at bottling when possible.

About the Region

Northern Rhône, France

The Northern Rhône region, located in southeastern France, is renowned for its steep terraced vineyards and iconic appellations such as Côte-Rôtie, Hermitage, and Cornas. In recent years, the region has also become a focal point for natural winemaking. With its granite and schist soils, cool climate, and steep slopes, the Northern Rhône provides an ideal environment for sustainable viticulture. Natural winemakers here prioritize organic and biodynamic farming methods, cultivating classic grape varieties such as Syrah and Viognier with minimal intervention. By eschewing chemical additives and focusing on natural fermentation, they produce wines that showcase the region's terroir with purity and finesse. Northern Rhône's natural wines are known for their elegance, complexity, and sense of place, with Syrahs offering peppery spice, dark fruit flavors, and firm tannins, and Viogniers displaying floral aromatics and vibrant acidity. As the demand for authentic and terroir-driven wines continues to grow, the Northern Rhône remains a beacon of tradition and innovation in the world of natural winemaking.
