About Halkia

Anna Halkia's journey as a winemaker in Nemea, Greece, reflects a deep-rooted commitment to organic viticulture and authentic winemaking practices. Raised in Australia by immigrant parents, Anna returned to Nemea to raise her family and pursue her passion for wine. Recognizing the potential of her organic grapes, Anna embarked on a mission to craft her own wines rather than selling her fruit as raw material. With limited resources, she established a modest winemaking facility at her vineyard, relying on basic technology and natural winemaking techniques. Eschewing lab yeasts and enzymes due to financial constraints, Anna embraced wild fermentation and lo-fi winemaking, resulting in wines celebrated for their raw expression of organic fruit.

About the Region

Nemea, Greece

Nemea, located in the heart of Greece's Peloponnese peninsula, is a region with a storied winemaking tradition that is increasingly embracing natural winemaking practices. Famous for its indigenous grape variety Agiorgitiko, Nemea's vineyards benefit from a combination of Mediterranean climate, limestone soils, and mountainous terrain. Winemakers in Nemea are dedicated to sustainable viticulture, employing organic and biodynamic farming methods to nurture the vines and preserve the health of the land. In the cellar, minimal intervention is paramount, with spontaneous fermentations and aging in neutral vessels allowing the true expression of the grapes and terroir to shine through. The resulting natural wines from Nemea are a reflection of the region's rich winemaking heritage and natural beauty, with their vibrant flavors, elegant textures, and a sense of place that captures the essence of Greece's ancient winemaking traditions.
