A Word From Our Founder

Hi friends,

This month’s Orange Club is all about expressive bottles with texture, character, and plenty of personality. We’ve brought together a lineup that highlights different grapes, regions, and approaches to skin-contact winemaking, with each bottle offering its own take on orange wine.

From the vibrant Orange Cubique Pierre from Les Vins Pirouettes to Jean-François Malsert’s Le Délire de Coppi Maceration, this collection brings together a range of styles and producers. Brisat Orange from Azimut and Orange from Christina round out the lineup with their own distinctive expressions.

Whether you’re already a fan of skin-contact wines or looking to explore something a little different, we hope this month’s collection gives you plenty to discover and enjoy.

As always, thank you for supporting independent producers and being part of the MYSA community.

Cheers,

Holly

Club Pick 1

A vibrant skin-contact blend from Pierre Bannwarth, who joined the Pirouettes collective in 2022 and now works alongside his father, Stéphane, at Domaine Laurent Bannwarth. Grown organically on limestone and clay soils, with Demeter certification, the grapes are hand-harvested, fully destemmed, and macerated on the skins for seven days with regular foot crushing. The wine rests on its fine lees in stainless steel for five months before being bottled unfined, unfiltered, and without added sulfur. Bright, expressive, and dry, it delivers plenty of energy and texture.

Les Vins Pirouettes is a project launched by Christian Binner, that brings affordable natural wines to the table, and at the same time helps organic and biodynamic grape growers in Alsace move away from selling their grapes to cooperatives towards making and bottling natural wines. Each cuvée is made at a young grower’s winery, where they supply the grapes and Christian supplies his 20 years of expertise in making natural wine in Alsace, and of course his marketing and distribution savviness. Each cuvée will feature the name of the grower on the bottle. - Jenny & Francois

Club Pick 2

An orange wine from three parcels in Sécheras and Arras-sur-Rhône, planted on granitic sand, gneiss, mica schist, and clay. Farmed organically and harvested by hand, the Marsanne is directly pressed while the Roussanne and Viognier undergo 7 and 10 days of skin maceration. All three varieties ferment separately with indigenous yeasts and age for 9 months in sandstone amphoras before blending. Unfined and unfiltered, with a low dose of sulfur added before bottling.

Jean-François “Jeff” Malsert launched Domaine de L’Iserand’s first official vintage in 2017 after previously running the wine bar Carafes en Folie in Tournon-sur-Rhône. He farms steep granite slopes in Sécheras and Ozon, working the vineyards manually with two mules and using organic treatments with minimal copper and sulfur.

The domaine grows Syrah, Roussanne, Marsanne, Viognier, Gamay, Chasselas, and Dureza. In the cellar, Jeff relies on indigenous yeasts, with wines aged in demi-muids, concrete vats, and sandstone amphoras. Reds are generally fermented whole cluster, while some whites receive light maceration. The wines are unfined and unfiltered, with sulfur used only at bottling when possible.

Christina Netzl's journey into natural winemaking began at the tender age of 5, tending to her family's farm and vineyard alongside her parents and grandparents. With time, her parents redirected the family business solely towards grape cultivation and winemaking, expanding it to encompass the 28 hectares they currently operate in the Carnuntum winemaking region, situated just east of Vienna and north of the Neusidler See. Christina pursued studies in oenology and wine management in London, immersing herself in diverse wine styles from around the globe. Upon her return to the winery in 2007, she collaborated with her parents, later fostering a fervent commitment to organic viticulture, particularly after becoming a mother of two.
