Eva Bonet, the formidable winemaker and mayor of L’Ametlla de Segarra in Catalunya, is the driving force behind Celler Comalats. As the La Marquesa de la Garnatxa, she passionately champions the grape Garnacha, showcasing her dedication to winemaking and the promotion of this unique variety. The winery, named after the wooded foothills surrounding the region, was a dream realized by Eva’s late father, Jaume Bonet, who sought to revive winemaking in the face of declining vineyards during the 70s.

Comalats stands out not only for its picturesque setting but also for its commitment to organic viticulture. The twelve hectares of clay and limestone are home to meticulously tended vines of Garnacha, Picapoll, Syrah, and Cabernet Sauvignon. Certified by the Catalan Council of Ecological Agricultural Production, the vineyards are shielded from industrial pollution by their high altitude and remote location, offering pristine conditions for grape cultivation at 710m above sea level.

The Bonet family's connection to L’Ametlla de Segarra spans seven centuries, and Celler Comalats reflects their determination to revive winemaking traditions. Each bottle from Comalats tells a story—a narrative of a family's history, the challenges faced, and the triumphs achieved. Tasting their wines provides a unique opportunity to experience the essence of the modern day intertwined with the rich tapestry of the past, capturing the tension between tradition and innovation that defines Celler Comalats.

Club Pick 2

Spending 2 months on skins, it is slightly bitter yet floral and usually a little juicy as well. It's also old vines in volcanic soil which add lovely complexity. Muscat is one of our favorite expressions of an orange wine and for the price, this one is one of the best you can get!

Manuel Moraga Gutierrez is the owner and winemaker of Cacique Maravilla, a winery focused on traditional and non-interventionist Chilean wines in Yumbel in the Bio-Bio Valley of Chile’s Southern Regions. Manuel is the seventh generation of the Gutierrez family to call Yumbel home, and at least the fourth generation to tend vines. His great, great, great, great, great grandfather, Francisco Gutierrez Gutierrez, arrived in Chile in 1750 from the Canary Islands in search of gold and eventually amassed enough treasure to acquire land in Yumbel, some of which has remained in the family and is still owned by Manuel Moraga today. Francisco Gutierrez earned the respect of the local indigenous Mapuche people and was given the nickname ‘Cacique Maravilla’ (roughly translating to ‘Magnificent Chief’).

Les Vins Pirouettes is a project launched by Christian Binner, that brings affordable natural wines to the table, and at the same time helps organic and biodynamic grape growers in Alsace move away from selling their grapes to cooperatives towards making and bottling natural wines. Each cuvée is made at a young grower’s winery, where they supply the grapes and Christian supplies his 20 years of expertise in making natural wine in Alsace, and of course his marketing and distribution savviness. Each cuvée will feature the name of the grower on the bottle. - Jenny & Francois.

Most natural winemakers will tell you they make wines that they themselves like to drink; Yuki-san, revealing the former rigorous sommelier still residing inside him, makes wines that he’d like to pair. “Wine has a long history of walking hand in hand with great food cultures of the world, traditionally with the Western ones that are very rich in butter, oil, and meat. But my culture is different. When I was working as a somm in Kyoto fine dining restaurants, I’d sometimes have difficulty finding the perfect wine for pairing… so I ended up trying to make them as I’d like them to match,” he says about the philosophy behind his cute flower-dotted labels, which are created by his friend, a Japanese artist named Sacco. - Jenny & Francois
