Wonderwerk stands out also for their colorful, eye-catching labels: “We wouldn’t be anywhere without our friends Anton Goddard and Lana Shahmoradian who design all of our branding and label artwork, as well as the slew of other friends who lend their creative energy to making some of our more absurd and visual ideas come true,” Issamu acknowledges. “It’s true that you “drink with your eyes first” and so we’ve always wanted to create wines that jump out at you, grab your attention and make you go “what is this all about
?” Well, New York, thanks to this hot addition in the Jenny & Francois book, you can now wonder about Wonderwerk’s work as well! - Jenny and Francois

Les Terres Dubien is a small, yet exceptional estate in the MĂ©docaine peninsula, north of Bordeaux, founded in 2020. With just 3 hectares of vineyards, Benoit, the winemaker, embraces organic and biodynamic practices to highlight the unique terroir of each plot. His wines are crafted with native yeasts, gentle extractions, and minimal intervention, aging in vats and old barrels for 8 to 18 months. The harvest is manual, often with the help of friends, adding a personal touch to every bottle. Les Terres Dubien is a true expression of the land, with collaborative projects that further enrich its offerings.

Kiko Calvo is a winery located in Spain's Castilla y LeĂłn region. Known for its diverse climate and terrain, this area is ideal for growing grapes. Kiko Calvo, a rebel at heart, travelled the world working harvests before returning to his roots. He now produces unique wines, like the Bigardo, a lighter-bodied Tempranillo showcasing his global experiences.

Club Pick 4

With deep roots in winemaking, it wasn’t until winemaker Andres Carull's trip to Bordeaux that he was inspired to shift to natural wine, embracing this ‘old-but-new’ path. In line with this vision, he now focuses on crafting vibrant wines from living vines, as seen in this fresh, easy-drinking red that highlights the authentic expression of Alicante's Monastrell grape.

Andres Carull, the current custodian of Finca Casa Balaguer, has a captivating narrative deeply intertwined with the legacy of Rafa Bernabe, the father of natural wine in Valencia. Hailing from Villena in Alicante, Andres' journey into natural wine began with a revelatory sip in a bar in St. Emilion, Bordeaux. Inspired by the unconventional beauty of a cloudy glass of wine, Andres sought to bring such innovation back home, eventually leading him to the mentorship of Rafa Bernabe.

Taking the reins of Finca Casa Balaguer from Rafa in 2013, Andres transformed the estate into a hub of cutting-edge winemaking. The two worked together for three years until Rafa's health concerns prompted him to step away.

Davide Gentile and Marco Giuliani, childhood friends from Abruzzo who lost touch after university, reunited with a shared passion for wine. Together, they embarked on a winemaking journey fueled by a deep appreciation for natural methods and bold experimentation. Unlike many, they eschewed formal wine education, agronomists, and oenologists, opting instead to learn through hands-on experience in vineyards and cellars. Their inaugural fermentation in 2010 was plagued by mishaps, prompting them to seek the intervention of an expert grandmother, known for her skill in dispelling the evil eye, to perform a ritual over their grapes. Miraculously, it proved successful, giving rise to Lammidia ("evil eye" in Abruzzese dialect), their venture into winemaking. - From Cream Wine

Club Pick 6

Crafted from a grape you've likely never heard of vinyater, this organic and biodynamic gem offers crisp apple aromas with subtle earthy undertones. By letting the fermentation process naturally unfold and leaving contact with the lees, VY allows this wine to fully express itself, delivering an authentic representation with a lovely slight creaminess on the finish.

Massimo Marchiori and Antonella Gerosa, an Italian couple hailing from Piedmont, have embarked on a remarkable winemaking journey in Massís de Bonastre, nestled in the Baix Penedés region. Their mission? To revive neglected old vines and lesser-known grape varietals, transforming them into treasures of extreme quality and concentration. Embracing organic farming practices, they cultivate their plots with care, yielding grapes of exceptional character. In the cellar, they practice the art of minimal intervention winemaking, allowing native yeasts to guide fermentation and refraining from adding any additives, fining, or filtration, eschewing even the addition of SO2.

Club Pick 7

"LumiĂšre" is a nod to Muchada-LĂ©clapart’s philosophy of creating a wine that illuminates with elegance and clarity, much like the lighthouse it’s named after. The 60 year old vines where these Palomino grapes are sourced add concentration, complexity, and overall harmony in line with this vision.

Salty, crisp notes of lemon zest, fresh herbs, and subtle compliments of almonds and dried fruits. A refreshing and consistent minerality that extends through a long finish.

David LĂ©clapart and Alejandro Muchada both identify as vignerons, placing unwavering trust in the meticulous care of their vineyards. Since their fateful encounter in 2011, they have shared a deep commitment to biodynamics, advocating for the vitality of the soil and the transcendence of agriculture and winemaking.

Their approach hinges on sourcing the finest raw materials, meticulously selecting plots of albariza and old palomino vines, capturing their most delicate essence through biodynamic viticulture, and preserving this value through minimal intervention in the winemaking process. - Muchada Leclapart

Club Pick 8

An enchanting orange wine crafted from equal parts Grenache Blanc and Grenache Gris. This aromatic wine undergoes 15 days of skin contact with de-stemmed grapes, resulting in mellow, well-integrated tannins. The vibrant profile is marked by intense tropical and citrus notes, delivering a refreshing and exotic drinking experience.

Saint-So is a joint project with François Ducrot, the skilled winemaker known as the "magician of vinification" from Domaine Enclos de La Croix. A few years ago, Ducrot noticed that many talented local organic farmers in Aspiran, a region west of Montpellier, were selling their grapes to co-ops for bulk wine production. Seeing this wasted potential, François decided to purchase these grapes and create a negoce that would highlight the vibrant wines from this lesser-known terroir of Languedoc.

In August 2019, we proposed to Ducrot the idea of vinifying a 100% Cinsault, a rare varietal often used for rosé or blending but one of our favorites for its light and energetic character. Cinsault has thin skins and large berries compared to other varietals like Grenache.

Club Pick 9

Blanc Cubique François is a vibrant white wine crafted by François Bléger at his family estate in Saint Hippolyte, Alsace.

Les Vins Pirouettes is a project launched by Christian Binner, that brings affordable natural wines to the table, and at the same time helps organic and biodynamic grape growers in Alsace move away from selling their grapes to cooperatives towards making and bottling natural wines. Each cuvĂ©e is made at a young grower’s winery, where they supply the grapes and Christian supplies his 20 years of expertise in making natural wine in Alsace, and of course his marketing and distribution savviness. Each cuvĂ©e will feature the name of the grower on the bottle. - Jenny & Francois
