Domaine Marcel Richaud

Marcel started with 14 hectares of his aunt's vines, producing his first vintage at 19 years old in a dilapidated cellar with no roof. He quickly made a name for himself in the nascent Parisian natural wine scene of the early 1990's and eventually began incorporating his father's cooperative vines into his eponymous production. Today, Marcel is retired and the estate is run by his children Thomas, Claire and Edith. The estate has grown to a sizeable 80 hectares over the years, a combination of Marcel progressively recouping family vineyards from the cooperative and purchasing land; about 40 hectares come from the family and the other 40 have been purchased or planted since the 1980's. - Louis Dressner

About the Winemaker

Domaine Marcel Richaud

If you're familiar with Cairanne, renowned for its exceptional terroir within the expansive Côtes-du-Rhône-Villages appellation, you've likely heard of Marcel Richaud.

Marcel hails from a family deeply rooted in vine cultivation, traditionally selling grapes to the local cooperative. At the age of 17, Marcel stunned his father by expressing his desire to become an independent vigneron. To his father, this decision seemed incomprehensible and fraught with risk—no apparent gains, more labor, and less compensation. Undeterred, Marcel embarked on his journey with 14 hectares of his aunt's vines, producing his inaugural vintage at the tender age of 19 in a decrepit cellar lacking a roof.

Rhone Valley, France

In recent years, the region has also become a prominent destination for natural winemaking. With its Mediterranean climate, varied soils, and a plethora of indigenous grape varieties, the Rhône Valley offers an ideal environment for sustainable viticulture. Natural winemakers here prioritize organic and biodynamic farming methods, cultivating grapes such as Syrah, Grenache, and Viognier with minimal intervention to express the true essence of the land. By eschewing chemical additives and focusing on natural fermentation, they produce wines that are vibrant, aromatic, and reflective of the region's unique terroir. Whether it's the bold and spicy reds of the northern Rhône or the lush and aromatic whites of the southern Rhône, the natural wines of the region are known for their complexity, balance, and sense of place.
