Divella Gussago

Zero sulfur / zero dosage, Alessandra's wines are 100% méthode champenoise so dialed into their provenance of clay and limestone that your mouth will salivate for minutes (if not hours) afterward. With less than a decade of winemaking experience under her wing, Alessandra has already achieved pioneer status within the region as one of the first estates to farm organically and the first to be female-led. The exceptional level of wines produced is mind-melting, especially considering that this is only the beginning. - SuperGlou

About the Winemaker

Divella Gussago

At twenty-nine, Alessandra Divella embodies the Italian counterpart to grower Champagne, challenging the prevalent industrial farming practices in Franciacorta. Her commitment to organic viticulture has characterized her two-hectare plot, leased from a seasoned neighbor for three decades, which now flourishes with diverse life, from rosehips to praying mantises. Transitioning toward permaculture is her ultimate goal, all while ensuring grapes are tenderly hand-harvested and treated.

Despite lacking a winemaking lineage, Alessandra's journey into wine was serendipitous, influenced by encounters with vintners who made her feel at ease.

The Region

Lombardy, Italy

Nestled in the northern reaches of Italy, Lombardy is a region celebrated for its stunning landscapes, rich cultural heritage, and, increasingly, its vibrant natural wine movement. With its diverse terroir encompassing the Alpine foothills, fertile plains, and picturesque lakeshores, Lombardy offers a diverse canvas for winemakers to express their craft. Indigenous grape varieties such as Nebbiolo, Chiavennasca (the local name for Nebbiolo in Valtellina), and Turbiana thrive in this dynamic environment, where natural winemakers embrace organic and biodynamic practices to nurture their vines in harmony with nature. By allowing grapes to ferment spontaneously with native yeasts and eschewing additives, they create wines that faithfully reflect Lombardy's terroir—exhibiting crisp acidity, elegant minerality, and a sense of place that speaks to the region's unique microclimates and soils. From the elegant reds of Valtellina to the sparkling Franciacorta, Lombardy's natural wines offer a compelling glimpse into the region's winemaking tradition, history, and commitment to sustainability, inviting enthusiasts to explore and savor the essence of this enchanting corner of Italy.
