Producer Profile

Silvio Messana

Silvio Messana, a New Yorker, relocated with his wife Catalina and their sons to his parents' hometown in Italy. His father had previously planted vineyards on a picturesque farm outside Florence, and they visited annually until it was sold following his father's passing. Silvio transformed the Chianti Classico farm into their residence, with a portion designated for a bed-and-breakfast, and began tending to the vineyards personally. Catalina, opposed to chemical usage, advocated for the adoption of biodynamic practices in the vineyard.

Tuscany

Tuscany, located in central Italy, is renowned for its breathtaking landscapes, historic towns, and world-class wines. In recent years, the region has also become a focal point for natural winemaking. With its diverse terroir, including hillsides, valleys, and coastal areas, Tuscany provides an ideal environment for sustainable viticulture. Natural winemakers in Tuscany prioritize organic and biodynamic farming methods, cultivating native grape varieties such as Sangiovese, Trebbiano, and Vernaccia with minimal intervention. By eschewing chemical additives and focusing on natural fermentation, they produce wines that showcase the region's rich history and unique terroir. Tuscany's natural wines are known for their elegance, balance, and complexity, with reds offering ripe fruit flavors, firm tannins, and a sense of place that reflects the region's sun-drenched vineyards and rolling hills. As the demand for authentic and terroir-driven wines continues to grow, Tuscany remains a leader in the natural wine movement, offering a taste of Italy's rich cultural heritage and winemaking traditions with each bottle.
