Frontón de Oro

Today the brothers mainly focus on cultivating the local varietals, Listan Negro, Listen Prieto, Negramoll, Maramajuelo, and Tintilla (also know as Trousseau), all in very poor volcanic/clay soils. Their vineyards are planted on some of the highest-elevation sites in Gran Canaria - many above 3,000 feet - and in many cases on terraced slopes, although some are cultivated wildly and untrained. The name of the estate “Fronton de Oro” refers to a huge rock that shines with sunlight (the one that adorns their label) known locally as “El Frontón”. Their entry-level wine, Fronton de Oro Tinto, is one of the most easily recognizable wines from the Canary Islands, while the Tintilla is an outstanding example of what their terroir can produce.

About the Winemaker

Frontón de Oro

"Since the early 2000s, brothers Pedro and Antonio Ramirez have steered Fronton de Oro, a cherished estate nestled in the hills of La Lechuza, a quaint village on Gran Canaria island. Established by their father in the 1970s, the estate initially envisioned a diverse agricultural haven, with crops ranging from vegetables to vines. Today, the focus lies predominantly on nurturing indigenous varietals—Listan Negro, Listan Prieto, Negramoll, Maramajuelo, and Tintilla (also known as Trousseau)—thriving in the nutrient-deprived volcanic and clay soils. Situated at staggering elevations, many exceeding 3,000 feet, their vineyards, some terraced and others left untamed, epitomize the rugged beauty of Gran Canaria.

The Region

Canary Islands, Spain

In the remote and rugged landscapes of the Canary Islands, natural winemaking is both an art and a way of life. These volcanic islands off the coast of northwestern Africa boast a viticultural heritage as ancient as it is unique. Here, amid the volcanic soils and Atlantic breezes, winemakers practice organic and biodynamic farming methods with a deep respect for the land. Indigenous grape varieties such as Listán Negro, Listán Blanco, and Malvasía thrive in this harsh yet fertile terrain, producing grapes of exceptional quality and character. In the cellar, minimal intervention is the guiding principle, as winemakers allow spontaneous fermentations and aging in neutral vessels to reveal the true essence of the grapes and their terroir. The resulting natural wines from the Canary Islands are a testament to the islanders' ingenuity and resilience, offering a taste of the volcanic soils and oceanic influences that shape these captivating wines.
