"TLZ Sonne #8" is easily one of the best orange wines that comes stateside. Full stop. Certainly not your grandma's Sauv Blanc. Five spice, tangerine peel, dried mango, ginger... Like the length of the Silk Road distilled down into 750 milliliters. How is it possible? Well, for starters, Franz Strohmeier is an absolute freak for radically natural winemaking. He sprays his vines with whey to protect against disease. He encourages biodiversity in the vineyard at the deepest level. And, of course, he uses only indigenous yeasts in his fermentations, and bottles without any added sulfur. Whatever Franz is doing, we hope he never stops. An absolute benchmark for orange wine, from any part of the world.
