Chalk Hill

The Chalk Hill brand started organically, as John explains: “Our focus was growing grapes for some of the best wineries in Australia. Each year we kept a few parcels of grapes to make some wine for gifting to family and friends, but that soon changed when we started getting hit up for orders before the grapes were picked. The business grew out of a demand instead of a business plan, and largely on the philosophy of making great wines to share with friends."

“Wine tells a story of the place we live. It shows the climate over the growing season, the soil in which it was grown, and the way the grapes have been tended to from the vineyard to the bottle. There can be nothing more beguiling, rewarding and enjoyable experience than trying to discover this story with friends and loved ones.” - Chalk Hill

About the Winemaker

Chalk Hill

The legacy of Chalk Hill began in 1839 with John Harvey's arrival in Adelaide, marking the inception of a grape-growing and winemaking heritage that spans over 180 years and six generations. From the establishment of Salisbury, named in honor of his wife's birthplace, to the migration to McLaren Vale, where superior grape growing conditions were recognized, the Harvey family's dedication to viticulture endured. Today, the sixth generation, led by John Harvey's son Tom, continues this rich tradition with five vineyards across McLaren Vale. What started as a focus on grape growing evolved into the Chalk Hill brand, driven by a demand for exceptional wines crafted to share with friends and family. Rooted in the belief that wine embodies the story of its origin.

McLaren Vale, Australia

McLaren Vale, nestled in South Australia's Fleurieu Peninsula, is renowned for its warm climate, diverse terroir, and premium grape-growing conditions. In recent years, this region has also emerged as a hub for natural winemaking. With a focus on sustainability and minimal intervention, McLaren Vale's winemakers are cultivating grapes organically and biodynamically to produce vibrant and expressive wines.
