Wonder Women of Wine Box

WELCOME TO OUR WONDER WOMEN OF WINE BOX!

There are lots of amazing women in natural wine and we want to showcase some of the ones we work with in this box by partnering with Wonder Women of Wine to bring a fun mix of wines and natural wine magazine Pipette to celebrate International Women's Day.

For this box, we've taken 6 bottles of what should be over $240 of natural wine and discounted it to $219.95 plus a free Pipette magazine from another wonderful woman in wine, Rachel Signer!

Note: If one of the wines is sold out, we will swap it for another woman-owned wine of equal or greater value!

Nibiru - Julia Nather

We came across Nibiru from one of our awesome Instagram followers and they did not disappoint! Taking over their parents vineyard, Julia Nather and her partner Josef Schenter are creating some delicious natural wines in the Kamptal region.

Their vineyards are farmed biodynamically, without certification. Many of the vines are very old and, thanks to their deep roots, bring a lot of liveliness and structure to the wines. You can feel that even with their lightest and most classic wines. The work in the older vineyards is often more complex than in young vineyards, much time is put into the conservation of these.

Domaine de l'Envol - Catherine Hirsinger

We met co-owners Catherine and Raphael via our friends Melusine Wines and already knew a bit about them going into the meeting. The first thing we noticed when we walked in was a photo of Catherine on the wall with a crown. Asking Raphael about this was the perfect lead-in to the story of the vineyard because Catherine was actually the Alsace wine queen (from the wine festival we mentioned above) several years back and this is how she and Raphael met! Raphael had been out on his own growing grapes for a co-op and Catherine’s parents were selling their grapes to the same one. A few years later Raphael decided to make his own wine, as he didn’t feel the co-op was getting the right expression out of the grapes and wanted control over the process. Since Raphael and Catherine were dating they all tried his wines and her parents thought they would also like to control the winemaking process of their grapes. This was the beginning of Domaine de l’Envol!

Martha Stoumen Wines - Martha Stoumen

Martha Stoumen Wines was founded upon the desire to recapture a farming and winemaking culture that has all but faded away: a winemaking culture of patience.

For her wines, she leases as wells as farms around half of the vineyards herself. The other half are farmed by multi-generation farmers who understand their land, and their family's land, and who farm with the same philosophies in mind. Patience in the vineyard means composting rather than adding synthetic fertilizers, allowing predatory insects the ability to outcompete pests rather than spraying insecticides, and doing proper handwork, such as pruning for vine longevity rather than high yields. Above all, Stoumen strives to make wines that are delicious, joyful, and truly representative of California.

Donkey & Goat - Tracy Brandt

Donkey & Goat Winery is owned and operated by Jared & Tracey Brandt in Berkeley, California. They make “natural wines” which is a term that covers both the vineyard and the cellar. That is what distinguishes natural wine– the extension of natural farming philosophies that drive the practices for sustainable, natural & biodynamic farming into the cellar.

Their wines are made from sustainably (or more) farmed vineyards in the Sierra Nevada, Mendocino and Napa. In the cellar nothing is removed and nothing is added save minimal effective sulphur. Sulphur is a contentious issue in the natural wine world. They have made wines with zero sulphur added but in general they do use minimum effective sulphur. Or they use as little as possible and their levels going into bottle fall within the predominant guideline for natural wines in Europe. Their wines are bottled without stabilization, fining or filtration. While not required, they include the ingredient list on their label which is remarkably short: grapes and minimal sulphur. They have made their wines in this manner since they created Donkey & Goat in 2004 and will continue to do so until they stop.

Maloof - Bee Maloof

Calcarius is an avant-garde natural wine project from Valentina Passalacqua,

A true yin and yang team. One materials engineer grounded in hard science, one restaurant professional with a sensory aligned M.O. Two nerds with a penchant for good hospitality and properly fermented pizza dough.

Bee (Selman) is the indispensable full partner and co winemaker of Maloof Wines. She has brought an immeasurable amount of hard scientific knowledge and dedication to the project. Prior to playing with grapes, she worked for close to a decade as a materials science engineer within the aerospace industry. As a long-time lover of food and wine, Bee turned her scientific eye from rotorcraft to vinification during the 2016 harvest.

Together, in 2017 Ross & Bee decided to leave their respective careers on the East coast behind to go on a westward journey to be closer to the magic. Who knows what the future may hold!

Old Westminster - Lisa Hinton

Old Westminster is my family’s collective effort to put Maryland wine on the world map. We started this endeavor in 2011, the year I graduated college. It’s the result of family discussions on “how to preserve our farm and put the land to work.” We were abducted by the idea of planting a vineyard. We all agreed that growing and making wine that reflects our land through a vineyard was an exciting proposition. As a curious chemist, being the winemaker is a perfect fit for me.
